Reliance on fossil fuels is a national security threat.

The veteran community has emerged as a strong advocate for pro-climate policies. Veterans bring a unique perspective to the issue of climate change, having experienced firsthand the environmental impacts of military operations and the importance of preparing for and addressing potential threats to national security.

Veterans can play a key role in the transition to a clean energy economy, leveraging their skills and experience to drive progress towards a more sustainable future. As we work to address the urgent threat of climate change, it is crucial that we continue to engage and support the veteran community in these efforts. By working together, we can build a more resilient and sustainable future for all.

Where we stand…

  • Experts in national security and foreign policy agree: climate change is a national security threat multiplier. Existing threats like conflict, migration, and terrorism are exacerbated by climate change. As veterans who have experienced these threats first-hand, we understand the importance of preparing for and mitigating these threats before they arrive on our shores.

  • Many veterans return from overseas deployments with health issues, ranging from asthma to cancer, caused by exposure to toxic substances, dirty air, and other forms of environmental pollution. These health problems don’t just affect the individual patients, either. They cost society billions of dollars in healthcare expenses and lost productivity.

  • Transitioning to a clean energy economy will create good jobs that would help more than just veterans. Renewable energy technologies are becoming more cost competitive with traditional fossil fuel technologies, which could help millions of veterans who rely on fixed incomes due to service-connected disability save billions of dollars.

  • Many veterans have the technical skills, leadership experience, and teamwork abilities that are essential in the renewable energy sector. Investing in programs specifically designed to train and employ veterans in the clean energy industry will allow many veterans to continue their service to society. By supporting clean energy initiatives, veterans can not only help address climate change but also create economic opportunities for themselves and their communities.
