Honoring Our Heroes Beyond Black History Month: A Tribute to Signa Oliver

As we approach the end of Black History Month, we reflect on the narratives and accomplishments of Black Americans, whose profound contributions to our nation's history extend far beyond a single month. Their stories are a vital part of our collective history, deserving recognition 365 days a year.

This year, we spotlight a remarkable individual from our own community, VetsForward Board Member Signa Oliver. Not only has she served our country with distinction as a Captain in the U.S. Army, but her post-military service continues to impact our community profoundly.

Signa's tenure in the Army is marked by excellence and leadership in roles ranging from a Combat Telecomms Center Operator to a Judge Advocate Officer. Her service years span from 1981 to 1987 as enlisted and from 1995 to 1998 as an officer, a testament to her enduring dedication to our nation.

Beyond her military achievements, Signa enriches our community through her work with the Phoenix Union High School District 2 Board and as a Board Member for Vets Forward. She is a tireless advocate for education and veteran advocacy, embodying the spirit and values we honor during—and indeed after—Black History Month.

Our Commitment: Year-Round Recognition

The valor and dedication of Arizona's Black veterans, like Signa Oliver and the distinguished individuals we've honored this month, inspire us every day. Their courage and resilience are not just chapters of history; they are enduring lessons that shape our future.

As we close Black History Month, let's embrace the essence of this celebration and continue to share these stories throughout the year. By doing so, we not only honor their legacy but also reinforce our commitment to equality, justice, and opportunity for all.

Thank you, Signa, and to all Black veterans, for your contributions and for inspiring us to be better citizens and stewards of your legacy. We are eternally grateful.
