Arizona Corporation commission approves aps rate hike

Aaron Marquez, Co-Founder of VetsForward speaks out against the APS proposed rate hike at the Arizona Corporation Commission open meeting.

Last week, Arizona Public Service (APS) proposed another rate hike to the Arizona Corporation Commission (ACC) that caught the attention of Arizona residents and advocates alike. This proposal comes on the heels of a year where APS reported a 22% profit increase, largely attributed to the record summer heat experienced across the state. The utility company's request aims to increase rates by an average of 11%, a move that has sparked widespread concern and debate about the implications for consumers and the future of energy in Arizona.

At the open meeting, Aaron Márquez, Co-Founder of VetsFWD, voiced concerns of Arizona's veterans and broader community and stood firmly against APS's proposed rate increase. As a veteran and Phoenix resident, Aaron eloquently highlighted the growing hardship of rising energy costs on Arizona's families, especially those on fixed incomes, and the urgent need for a transition towards more energy-efficient and renewable sources.

His speech underscored the unjust financial burden of the proposed rate hike and pointed out the environmental and health ramifications of continued reliance on fossil fuels.

Despite Aaron's persuasive arguments and the clear call from the community to oppose, the ACC’s vote revealed a stark reality: only one commissioner, Anna Tovar (D), voted in alignment with the interests of the people. This outcome, while disappointing, serves as a powerful call to action for all Arizonans who support sustainable and equitable energy solutions; It’s time to elect commissioners that will put Arizonans at the forefront of legislative decision-making.
